A static caravan in a July heatwave is one of the hottest places to sleep in Britain. Thin walls, a metal or lightly insulated skin, big windows and almost no thermal mass mean the inside tracks the sun with barely a delay — hotter than a house all afternoon and slow to cool in the evening. Air conditioning fixes it, and small split systems are now fitted to statics and lodges across the UK. But two questions come before any brochure: does your park permit it, and can your pitch's electrical supply run it?
Why statics and lodges overheat
A house rides out a hot day on the thermal mass of its bricks. A static caravan has none of that: lightweight sandwich walls, an aluminium or composite skin that soaks up sun, and a high ratio of window to wall. Solar gain arrives fast and there is nothing to absorb it [4]. On south-facing pitches with no shade the bedroom end can stay uncomfortably warm well past midnight — the complaint that brings most owners to this page.
The options, from cheapest to best
Portable units — the common first try
Most owners start with a portable air conditioner, and most are disappointed. A portable must push its hot exhaust out through a window or door — hard to seal in a caravan — so warm air leaks straight back in. It also takes up scarce floor space, is noisy in a small bedroom (see our noise guide), and its power draw is significant on a limited pitch supply. As a stopgap for a bad week it works, barely; as a solution for every summer it frustrates.
Through-wall and window units
Self-contained through-wall or window units are common on holiday homes in the United States but rare on UK parks — few UK statics are built to take them, cutting a large aperture in a sandwich wall is invasive, and many parks would treat it as a prohibited structural alteration. A small split system — the proper answer, where the park permits
A small wall-mounted split system — the indoor unit high on a wall, a compact condenser outside on the base or a bracket — is what actually solves the problem. A 2.0–2.5 kW unit suits most statics, cools the space in minutes rather than hours, dehumidifies muggy coastal air, and in reversible form heats the van far more cheaply than plug-in electric heaters in the shoulder seasons. Fitting to a caravan is a specialist variant of a normal domestic job: the installer must handle the thin wall construction, secure the condenser without compromising the chassis or skin, and route condensate cleanly. Refrigerant work is legally restricted to F-gas certified engineers [1].
Park rules: check before you buy anything
This is the section that saves owners money. A static caravan sits on land the park owns, under a pitch or licence agreement — and on many parks, external alterations to the van need the park owner's written permission. An outdoor condenser, external pipework or anything fixed to the exterior usually falls within that. Some parks refuse external fixings entirely; others are happy provided the installation is tidy and quiet; many have approved contractors they prefer you to use.

Pitch electrics: the 16-amp question
Many holiday-park pitches are supplied through a 16A connection — roughly 3.6 kW for the entire caravan. A small inverter split typically draws well under 1 kW once running, which is comfortably within that, but the margin disappears if a kettle, immersion heater and electric hob run at the same time. Larger supplies (25A/32A) are common on lodge plots and newer parks, and some pitches meter electricity through the park at its own tariff rather than a domestic supplier's — worth understanding before you model running costs, since the domestic price cap [2] does not automatically describe what a park charges. Confirm your pitch's supply rating with the park before buying anything, and let the installer verify the connection and load on survey.
Condensate and winter drain-down
In cooling mode the indoor unit produces condensate, which on a static usually drains by gravity beneath the van — simple, but it should discharge clear of the base, not onto it. If your van is winterised and drained down each autumn, tell the installer: the air conditioning itself holds no water system, but the condensate route should be left free-draining, and a reversible unit you plan to use for off-peak heating changes the drain-down conversation with whoever winterises the van.
Lodges vs statics
A modern residential-style lodge is closer to a garden room than to an older static: better insulation, timber-frame construction, often a 32A or larger supply, and walls that take an indoor unit as easily as a house. If you own a lodge, the installation is straightforward and the sizing generous margins smaller; the park-permission step, however, applies exactly the same. Can you fit air conditioning to a static caravan? Yes — small split systems are fitted to statics and lodges across the UK. The two prerequisites are the park owner's permission for the external unit and a pitch electrical supply that can carry it.
Do I need the park's permission? On many parks, yes — external alterations and fixings usually need the park owner's consent under your pitch agreement, and some parks prohibit them. Always ask in writing before buying equipment.
Will a portable air conditioner work in a caravan? Partially. The exhaust hose is hard to seal in caravan windows, so cooled air is partly undone by warm leakage, and the unit is noisy in a small bedroom. It is a stopgap, not a solution.
