Air conditioning a garage is entirely feasible — a small reversible split system is the usual answer, just as it is for a garden room — but the garage is the one domestic space where the use of the room should drive the specification more than the room itself. A garage gym, a woodworking shop and a converted home office place completely different demands on the same four walls, and one of them is sometimes a reason not to fit refrigerant equipment at all.
Start with the building, not the unit
Most British garages were built to keep rain off a car, not to hold a temperature. A single-skin brick or block garage with an uninsulated concrete floor and a metal up-and-over door gains and loses heat faster than any sensibly sized unit can fight. Fit air conditioning to that shell and it will run flat out in July, still feel stuffy, and cost a fortune to heat in January.
The rule is simple: insulate before you size. The garage gym is the strongest case for proper air conditioning. Exercise generates serious heat and humidity — one person training hard adds several hundred watts of heat and a lot of moisture to a small space, and an open door plus a fan just moves warm air around. A wall-mounted split provides genuine cooling and, crucially, dehumidification, which is what makes a summer session bearable. Ventilation still matters for air quality, so keep some fresh-air path; the air conditioning handles temperature and moisture, not oxygen. In winter, the same unit in heating mode warms the space before an early session far faster than a plug-in heater — the same heating-and-cooling logic that makes reversible units the default everywhere else.
Workshop
A workshop is the case to think hardest about. Woodworking dust, grinding grit and spray mist are hostile to the indoor unit of a split system: filters clog quickly, coils foul, and maintenance intervals shrink from annual to monthly.
Home office or games-room conversion
A garage converted to a home office, games room or studio is, once insulated, one of the easiest rooms in the house to condition — compact, one obvious wall for the indoor unit, and the outdoor condenser on the driveway side a metre away. The comfort case matches an indoor home office: steady temperature all day, quiet enough for calls, and efficient heat-pump heating through winter.
