Two things now decide whether that money is well spent: a heat-load calculation that accounts for your glazing and orientation rather than just floor area, and an installer holding a valid F-Gas company certificate. Everything else, brand, colour, app control, matters far less.
Here is the position we will defend throughout: if a quote arrives with a kilowatt figure and no mention of your windows, insulation or which way the room faces, treat it as a guess. Undersized kit run flat out in a west-facing St Albans living room will disappoint you every August, and no amount of after-the-fact adjustment fixes it.
What the job actually looks like in a Hertfordshire house
A domestic split system has two halves. An indoor unit sits in the room being cooled, an outdoor condenser sits on a wall bracket, flat roof or ground stand, and the two are joined by insulated copper refrigerant pipework, a condensate drain and a control cable. The pipe run is the part that shapes the whole project. Shorter and straighter is better, which is why the survey matters more than the brochure.
In the Victorian and Edwardian terraces around Fishpool Street and the streets off Hatfield Road, pipework usually travels through a cupboard, a chimney breast void or externally in a slim trunking run painted to match the brickwork. In post-war and 1990s detached houses in Marshalswick, Bricket Wood or Chiswell Green, routes through a loft or garage are often available, which keeps the internal disruption to a couple of small drilled holes. Larger commuter-belt properties frequently justify a multi-split, where one outdoor unit serves two to five indoor heads, saving both wall space and money against several standalone systems.
Expect the following on a typical single-room install:
- Pre-install survey, including electrical supply check and agreement on unit positions
- Core drilling of a 60–80mm hole through the external wall
- Bracket mounting, pipework, vacuum-down (evacuation) and pressure test
- Refrigerant charge, electrical connection and commissioning
- Handover, controls demonstration, and paperwork including the F-Gas record for the system
Commissioning is not a formality. A system that has not been properly evacuated will hold moisture in the refrigerant circuit, and that shortens compressor life. Ask to see the vacuum gauge reading before the engineer leaves.
Sizing: floor area is the starting point, not the answer
Two rooms in St Albans can be identical in square metres and need units a full kilowatt apart. Heat gain comes overwhelmingly through glass, and it comes at different times of day depending on which way that glass faces. A south-facing bay picks up solar gain through the middle of the day; a west-facing wall of glazing takes the worst of it from mid-afternoon into evening, exactly when families are home. Oversizing carries its own penalty. A unit far larger than the load short-cycles, which means poor humidity control, temperature swings and more compressor starts. The right answer is a calculated one, and any competent installer will produce it during the survey.
Different rooms want different machines
Bedrooms are a noise problem before they are a cooling problem. Look for an indoor unit with a quoted sound pressure level in the low 20s dB(A) on its lowest fan speed, plus a night or sleep mode that ramps the setpoint gently and dims the display. Living rooms and open-plan kitchen-diners need capacity and reach, because the air has to travel further and there are more people and appliances contributing heat. Home offices sit somewhere between the two: quiet enough for calls, but sized for equipment gain and often used all day in full afternoon sun.
Conservatories and garden rooms are the hardest brief in any St Albans property. Glass on three sides and above means peak gains several times those of a comparable brick-built room, and the correct system is frequently a size or two above what owners expect. Loft conversions have the same asymmetry in reverse: they overheat under a warm roof in summer and lose heat fast in winter, so a loft conversion system usually earns its keep as a heater too.
The 2025 refrigerant rules change what you should accept
From 1 January 2025, GB F-Gas regulation prohibited placing on the market single split air conditioning systems containing less than 3kg of fluorinated greenhouse gases with a global warming potential of 750 or more [2]. In practice that ends new R-410A single splits, because R-410A has a GWP of 2,088. R-32, at a GWP of 675, sits below the threshold and is now the mainstream domestic refrigerant, alongside propane (R-290) in a growing number of monobloc products [2].
What this means for a St Albans quote in 2026:
- A new single split specified with R-410A should prompt questions. It may be legacy stock, and its long-term servicing position is weaker as HFC quotas continue to tighten under the phase-down [2].
- R-32 is mildly flammable (A2L classified), so pipework routing, room volume and charge size are governed by the equipment's own installation standards. This is normal, well-understood work for a certified installer, and a reason not to hand the job to a general handyman.
- Existing R-410A systems remain legal to run and service. You are not required to replace anything. But if your unit is 12 to 15 years old and needs a major repair, the arithmetic increasingly favours replacement.
How to vet an installer before you let anyone drill your wall
Anyone installing, servicing or decommissioning equipment containing F-gas must hold the relevant qualification, and companies employing them need an F-Gas company certificate for stationary refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump work [3]. For domestic split systems, the qualification to ask about is F-Gas Category I, which covers all activities on all system sizes, including leak checking, refrigerant recovery, and the leak-tight brazed pipework that determines whether your system still works in five years.
Ask for four things in writing:
- F-Gas company certificate number and the certification body (for example REFCOM or Bureau Veritas), which you can verify.
- Electrical competence for the new circuit, spur or isolator, with a certificate on completion.
- Public liability insurance and, where the manufacturer requires it, accredited-installer status, since extended manufacturer warranties of five to seven years are typically conditional on both that status and documented annual servicing.
- A written heat-load calculation per room, not a single capacity figure.

Planning permission, conservation areas and listed buildings
St Albans City and District Council is the local planning authority for the city plus Harpenden, Redbourn, Wheathampstead, London Colney and the surrounding villages, and it maintains a number of designated conservation areas, including the historic core around the Cathedral and St Michael's [4].
Outdoor units on houses are often permitted development under Part 14 of the General Permitted Development Order, subject to conditions on siting, size and noise, with the MCS 020(a) standard used to demonstrate that noise at the neighbouring assessment position stays within 42 dB(A) [5]. The conditions bite hardest in exactly the places St Albans has plenty of: in a conservation area the unit generally cannot go on a wall or roof slope facing a highway, and on a listed building, listed building consent is required regardless of permitted development rights. Price rises with pipe length, scaffolding or access equipment, brickwork that needs making good, condensate pumps where gravity drainage is not available, plumbing a new electrical circuit back to a full consumer unit, and any decorative reinstatement in a period interior. Price falls when several rooms are done in one visit, because the labour, access and outdoor unit are shared.
One tax point worth raising with your installer: the zero rate of VAT for energy-saving materials, which covers air source heat pumps, runs to 31 March 2027 [6]. Whether a particular air-to-air installation qualifies depends on how it is specified and installed, so ask for the VAT treatment to be confirmed on the quotation rather than assumed. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme's £7,500 grant, by contrast, applies to air source heat pumps serving wet heating systems and to ground source heat pumps and biomass boilers. The scheme also pays £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump, in residential properties only, and only where the property is left with no fossil fuel heating [10]. So a St Albans home that keeps its gas boiler and adds comfort cooling will not qualify — the bar is what the house is left running on, not what the units replace [7].
Running costs, and the winter argument
A modern inverter split system is a heat pump that happens to run in reverse. In cooling mode a 2.5kW unit typically draws 500–700W once the room is at setpoint, so at the mid-20s pence per kilowatt hour that Ofgem's cap has kept typical unit rates near through 2025 [8], an evening's use in a bedroom costs pennies rather than pounds.
Heating is where the case sharpens. An air-to-air heat pump delivers three to four units of heat per unit of electricity in mild weather, which makes it a genuinely economical way to warm a home office or loft room in October and April without firing the gas boiler for the whole house. Keeping it working: servicing and the paperwork you must not lose
Filters need cleaning every few weeks in heavy use, and a professional service once a year covering coil cleaning, condensate check, electrical check and refrigerant pressure test. Skip it and you risk two things: a slow decline in output that owners rarely notice until it is severe, and a voided manufacturer warranty.
Businesses carry extra duties. Systems containing five tonnes of CO2 equivalent or more must be leak-checked at set intervals and records kept [3]. Separately, air conditioning systems with an effective rated output above 12kW must be inspected by an accredited energy assessor at least every five years, with the report lodged on the central register [9]. How long does an installation take? One room, one day. Two or three rooms sharing an outdoor unit, two to three days. A ducted whole-home system in an occupied house typically runs one to two weeks and is far easier to coordinate during a renovation or loft conversion than afterwards.
Do I need planning permission for the outdoor unit? Often not, because Part 14 permitted development rights cover many domestic installations subject to siting, size and the 42 dB(A) noise condition in MCS 020(a) [5]. Conservation areas restrict where the unit can go, and listed buildings need consent. Confirm with St Albans City and District Council before work starts if there is any doubt [4].
Can air conditioning be fitted in a Victorian house without damaging it? Yes, and it is routine. Pipework runs through cupboards, redundant chimney flues, floor voids or discreet external trunking, and units can be sited on rear elevations out of public view. Is R-410A banned? New single split systems containing it can no longer be placed on the market in Great Britain as of 1 January 2025 [2]. Existing systems can still be run, serviced and topped up. Specify R-32 or R-290 for anything new.
How much does it cost to run per hour? Roughly 12p to 20p an hour for a single bedroom unit at steady state, based on 500–700W draw and typical 2025 unit rates [8]. Larger living-room systems and hot start-up periods draw more.
Will one outdoor unit do the whole house? A multi-split condenser can serve up to five indoor heads, but capacity is shared, so all rooms running at once may each get less than their rated output. Does the warranty really depend on servicing? Extended warranties of five to seven years are generally conditional on installation by an accredited installer and on documented annual maintenance. Keep the service records with the F-Gas log for the system.
