Air conditioning installation in Bristol is priced by geography as much as by equipment. The same 2.5kW split system that goes onto a level suburban semi in Horfield in a day can need scaffolding, a gantry platform or a redesigned pipe run on a terrace in Totterdown, because the house stands on a hill, the rear wall drops away two storeys further than the front, and there is nowhere flat to put a ladder. Budget £1,800–£3,000 for a straightforward single-room installation, £3,000–£8,000 for multi-room, and then let a proper survey tell you which side of "straightforward" your street sits on.

That is the theme of this guide, and it recurs in almost every Bristol enquiry we review: before anyone argues about brands or kilowatts, work out where the outdoor unit can physically and legally go, and how an engineer will safely reach that spot. Get those two questions answered early and the rest of the project is routine.

Why the outdoor unit decides everything here

A split system needs an outdoor condenser within a sensible pipe run of the rooms being cooled, mounted somewhere with clear airflow, gravity drainage or a condensate pump, and safe access for installation and future servicing. On flat ground this is a solved problem. Bristol is not flat ground.

Three siting patterns come up again and again:

  • Rear walls above a drop. On the stepped terraces of Totterdown and Cliftonwood, the back of the house can stand well above garden level. A bracket position that looks obvious from inside the kitchen may only be reachable from a tower or scaffold, and that access cost belongs in the quote, not in a surprise invoice.
  • Ground-level stands on sloping gardens. A condenser can sit on a ground stand or a small plinth instead of a wall bracket, which avoids scaffolding entirely. On a sloped garden the installer builds a level base first. Slightly longer pipework is usually a cheaper problem than working at height.
  • Flat roofs and side returns. Many Victorian terraces have a back addition with a flat roof at first-floor level. It is often the best compromise: short pipe runs, no scaffold, and the unit out of sight from the street. A good Bristol survey therefore starts outside, not inside. If a quote arrives without the surveyor having stood in your garden or on your flat roof, treat the access assumptions, and the price, as provisional.

The city, house type by house type

Victorian terraces on the hills — Totterdown, Cliftonwood, Windmill Hill. Solid brick walls, generous ceiling heights, and the access questions above. Internally these houses are cooperative: pipework travels through alcove cupboards, redundant chimney voids and floor spaces, and a single wall unit high in a rear bedroom or living room is discreet. The cost driver is almost never the indoor unit; it is how the engineer reaches the outdoor one. Where scaffolding is unavoidable, doing two or three rooms in the same visit spreads that fixed cost, which is where a multi-split earns its keep. Clifton's Georgian stock. Clifton and the streets around the village contain conservation areas and a high concentration of listed buildings, including the well-known crescents. In a conservation area, permitted development rights for an outdoor unit are restricted on elevations facing a highway, and on a listed building, listed building consent is required before an installation regardless of permitted development rights [1]. That does not make the project impossible — rear elevations, lightwells and basement areas frequently offer compliant positions — but it makes the sequence matter: settle the siting and consent position with the council first, price the pipework second. Harbourside flats and conversions. Around the Floating Harbour the stock splits in two. Warehouse conversions and older blocks rarely have provision for condensers, so everything depends on the freeholder or management company agreeing a position on a balcony, roof or external wall — and leaseholders almost always need that consent in writing before any drilling. Newer towers sometimes have designed-in plant space or a communal system, which changes the conversation entirely. Flats also generally need planning permission for an external unit, because Part 14 permitted development rights for air source heat pumps do not extend to flats in the way they do to houses [2]. Suburban semis — Bishopston, Horfield, Henleaze, Westbury. This is the easy end of Bristol. Level access, a side return or rear wall for the condenser, cavity walls that drill cleanly, and often a loft for pipe routing. A single bedroom or a home office is a one-day job; a three-room multi-split is two to three days. If you are unsure what capacity a room needs, floor area alone is not the answer — a west-facing bay in Bishopston carries far more late-afternoon solar gain than the same square metres facing north.

The rules that apply to every installation, on any hill

The regulatory skeleton is the same across the city:

  • Refrigerants. Since 1 January 2025, GB F-Gas rules prohibit placing on the market single split systems containing less than 3kg of fluorinated greenhouse gases where the refrigerant's global warming potential is 750 or more [3]. That ends new R-410A single splits; R-32 (GWP 675) is the mainstream choice, with propane (R-290) appearing in a growing number of products. Existing R-410A systems remain legal to run and service.
  • Who may do the work. Anyone working on the refrigerant circuit must hold an F-Gas qualification — Category I covers all activities on all system sizes — and companies need an F-Gas company certificate [3]. This is the first credential to verify, before price.
  • Planning. For houses, an outdoor unit is often permitted development under Part 14 of the General Permitted Development Order, subject to conditions on siting and size, with the MCS 020(a) planning standard used to show noise at the nearest neighbouring assessment position stays within 42 dB(A) [2][4]. Conservation areas restrict highway-facing elevations, an Article 4 direction can remove rights street by street, listed buildings need listed building consent [1], and flats need permission.   • Sizing. Cooling loads should be calculated from glazing, orientation, occupancy and equipment gains, not guessed from floor area — the methodology set out in CIBSE Guide A [6]. On Bristol's slopes, orientation is doubly important: an elevated west-facing terrace room gets unshaded evening sun that a valley-floor room never sees.

Running costs are the good news: a modern inverter unit drawing 500–700W at steady state costs pennies per hour at the unit rates Ofgem's price cap has kept typical through 2025–26 [7], and in heating mode it delivers three to four units of heat per unit of electricity. The running-costs arithmetic favours it over resistive heating.

Vetting an installer for hillside work

The standard checks apply anywhere: F-Gas company certificate you can verify, electrical certification for the new circuit, public liability insurance, and a written room-by-room heat-load calculation rather than a single capacity figure. Our guide to choosing an installer covers the full list.

In Bristol, add two questions. First: how will you access the unit position, and is that access priced in writing? A quote that is silent on scaffolding for a Cliftonwood rear wall is not a cheaper quote; it is an incomplete one. Second: how will the unit be serviced in future years? A condenser that needed a scaffold to install needs thought about how it gets leak-checked and cleaned later — sometimes the better answer is a ground stand three metres further from the wall.

My house is on a steep street. Does that make installation impossible? No, but it changes the design. Ground stands, flat-roof positions and longer pipe runs all trade against working at height. Expect the survey to spend most of its time outside, and expect access to appear as a line in the quote.

Which refrigerant should a new system use? R-32 or R-290. New single splits using R-410A can no longer be placed on the GB market as of 1 January 2025 [3].

How long does installation take? One room with easy access, one day. Add scaffolding or multiple rooms, two to three days. Whatever the timescale, ask to see evidence of the vacuum-and-pressure-test stage before sign-off.
