Multi-split air conditioning systems

By Airva Editorial · Reviewed by Airva Technical Review · Updated 13 July 2026

A multi-split system runs several indoor units from a single outdoor unit, letting you cool and heat multiple rooms while keeping just one condenser outside.

Why choose multi-split

  • Fewer outdoor units — tidier and often easier to site than several separate splits.
  • Independent control — each room's indoor unit can be set separately.
  • Good for two to four rooms — a common sweet spot for family homes.

Trade-offs

Installation is more involved than a single split, and pipe runs to each room affect cost — see costs. For whole-home coverage you may also consider a ducted system.
