House too hot in summer: what actually works

UK homes are built to trap heat, because for eleven months of the year that is exactly what you want. Insulation, draught-proofing and double glazing hold warmth in winter — and hold it just as effectively in July, when a hot spell can turn an upstairs bedroom into a problem that lasts all night. If your house is too hot in summer, the honest answer is a triage ladder: free measures first, cheap measures second, and fitted cooling when you need a room to actually hold a temperature. This guide climbs that ladder in order and is straight about what each rung can and cannot do.

Step 1 — free measures: stop the heat getting in

Most of the heat in an overheating room came through the glass. Direct sun through a window delivers a few hundred watts per square metre — a large south- or west-facing window on a sunny afternoon is the equivalent of running a fan heater in the room. So the highest-value moves cost nothing:

  • Close blinds and curtains on sunny glazing before the sun reaches it — south-facing glass from late morning, west-facing glass from mid-afternoon. Shading a window after the room is hot is closing the stable door.
  • Keep windows and curtains closed during the hottest part of the day when the outside air is hotter than inside — UKHSA's hot-weather advice makes exactly this point, because "letting some air in" during a 32°C afternoon imports heat [2].
  • Time your ventilation. Open windows in the evening once the outside temperature drops below the inside temperature, and leave them open overnight where it is safe to do so.
  • Night purge. Open windows on opposite sides of the house, and upstairs and downstairs together, so cooler night air flushes the day's heat out of the building fabric — not just the air. It is the fabric (walls, ceilings, floors) that re-radiates heat at you the next day.
  • Switch off heat sources. Ovens, tumble dryers, incandescent lighting, consoles and desktop PCs all end up as room heat.

Done consistently, this routine can hold a typical house several degrees below the naive "windows open all day" approach. It costs nothing and you should do it whether or not you ever buy cooling.

Step 2 — cheap measures: fans, film and external shading

Fans do not cool air by a single degree — a fan in a closed room actually adds a little heat. What a fan does is move air across your skin so sweat evaporates faster, which makes you feel 2–3°C cooler and can make a warm bedroom sleepable. Fans are also the multiplier for a night purge: a fan in a window blowing hot air out on the evening of a hot day shifts far more heat than one pointed at your face. One caution from UKHSA: at air temperatures in the mid-30s and above, fans lose effectiveness and mainly circulate hot air [2].

Reflective window film rejects a worthwhile share of solar gain on glazing you cannot shade any other way, for tens of pounds per window. The trade-off is permanence: it also cuts winter solar gain and dims the room slightly year-round.

External shading — awnings, external blinds, shutters — is the quiet champion, because it stops solar gain before it passes through the glass, where internal blinds only intercept it after it is already inside. It is standard practice in southern Europe for a reason.

Why sleep is the real casualty

Most people tolerate a warm living room; what sends them looking for solutions is the third consecutive night trying to sleep at 27°C. Sleep quality degrades measurably above roughly 24°C, and hot nights are a health issue as well as a comfort one — UKHSA's guidance identifies overheated homes, and bedrooms at night in particular, as a risk during hot weather, especially for older people, young children and people with health conditions [2]. New builds: designed warm

Counter-intuitively, the homes that overheat worst are often the newest. High insulation, airtight construction and large glazed areas make a new flat or house superb at retaining heat — including heat you never wanted. The problem became common enough that building regulations grew a dedicated section: Approved Document O, in force for new residential buildings in England since 2022, requires designers to limit unwanted solar gain and provide a means of removing excess heat [1]. It applies to new homes at the design stage, so it does nothing for the existing stock — and even in post-2022 homes it sets a minimum standard, not a guarantee of comfort in a heatwave. Step 3 — when fitted cooling is the answer

Everything above shares one limitation: it slows heat down or helps you tolerate it. None of it can remove heat from the house faster than it arrives, which is what "holding 21°C on a 33°C day" requires. That is the specific job of refrigerant-based cooling, and it is the point of a fitted system: you choose a temperature, and the system holds it — day, night, heatwave or not.

For most UK homes that means a wall-mounted split system in the room or rooms that matter. Should I open the windows when it's hot? Only when the air outside is cooler than the air inside — usually evening and overnight. During the afternoon of a hot day, closed windows and closed blinds keep more heat out [2].

Do fans cool a room down? No — they cool people by speeding up evaporation from the skin, and they add a small amount of heat to the room itself. Use them for comfort and for pushing hot air out of windows in the evening.

Why is my new build hotter than my old house was? Modern insulation and airtightness retain heat superbly, and large glazed areas collect it.
