What "small" actually means, by category
The word does different work in each product category, and mixing them up is how people end up disappointed.
- Small portable units are about footprint and weight: a compact portable occupies roughly the floor space of a kitchen bin and weighs 20–30 kg, light enough to move between rooms. Slim wall-mounted splits: the smallest real air conditioning
If you want cooling that is small to look at rather than small in output, the compact wall-mounted split is the answer. Manufacturers now make compact indoor-unit classes around 25 cm tall and under 80 cm wide, designed to sit discreetly above a door or window. Behind the slim shell is a full split system: the compressor lives in the outdoor condenser, so the indoor unit is whisper-quiet, and almost every model is reversible — heating efficiently in winter as well as cooling in summer.

The sizing floor: how small is too small?
There is a physical floor under this whole category. Fixed split systems effectively start at about 2.0 kW, because below that the cost of the condenser, pipework and F-gas-certified installation [2] barely changes while the benefit shrinks — a smaller fixed unit costs almost as much to install as the right-sized one. So "I'll get a really small one to save money" rarely works for fixed systems; the saving is marginal and the risk is real.
The risk is the classic mistake: an undersized unit run flat out. A small unit that cannot meet the room's heat load runs continuously at full power, is noisier and less efficient than a correctly sized unit modulating gently, wears faster, and still leaves the room warm on the hottest days — precisely when you bought it. Small should describe the room and the unit's appearance, never a shortfall against the heat load. Mini "air coolers": an honest warning
Search for a small air conditioning unit online and the cheapest results — desk-top "personal coolers", "mini arctic air" gadgets, USB cooling cubes — are not air conditioning. They are evaporative coolers: a fan blowing air over water or a damp pad. They have no compressor, no refrigerant and no way to move heat out of the room, so they cannot lower the room's temperature; at best they create a slightly moist local breeze, and in a humid UK heatwave the added moisture can make a closed room feel worse. Do small units cost less to run?
