School air conditioning is the cooling — and increasingly the heating — of classrooms, ICT suites, halls and offices, usually with ceiling cassettes or a multi-zone heat pump system sized around a simple fact: a class of thirty pupils puts out roughly the heat of a domestic radiator, and it arrives in the same hour the sun is on the glazing. It is also one of the few commercial sectors with a natural installation calendar. The buildings empty for six weeks every summer, which is exactly when the work should happen, so the schools that get systems commissioned for September are the ones that survey in the spring term and book the August window early.
Hot classrooms are a teaching problem before they are a comfort problem
The case for classroom cooling is not luxury. Research on classroom conditions has repeatedly linked high temperatures to reduced concentration, slower work rates and lower test performance, and the Department for Education's own design guidance treats thermal comfort as part of the learning environment rather than an optional extra. Two pressure points make it worse. The first is the exam season: GCSEs and A-levels run through May and June, often in glazed halls and upper-floor classrooms that are the hottest rooms on site. The second is the building stock itself — large glazing, lightweight construction and flat roofs mean many post-war and modern blocks overheat readily, and opening windows onto a noisy road or a windy playground is not a controllable answer.

Ceiling cassettes or high-wall units — and the noise question
For classrooms, ceiling cassettes are usually the right answer: they distribute air evenly in four directions, avoid blowing directly onto the front row, keep the equipment out of reach, and free the walls for teaching displays. High-wall splits cost less and suit small offices, server cupboards and stores, but on a classroom wall they create a draught corridor and an irresistible target for flying objects.
Noise is not a soft consideration in schools. A unit that would be unremarkable in a shop can push a classroom over its acoustic budget, so indoor units should be selected on their low-speed sound data and sized so they are not working flat out during lessons. One system, two seasons: the decarbonisation angle
Almost every modern system a school would install is a reversible air-to-air heat pump, which changes the budget conversation. The same cassettes that cool in June heat in January, and for blocks currently on direct electric heating or an ageing boiler serving a handful of rooms, the running-cost case can stand on heating alone. For trusts writing decarbonisation plans, heat-pump classrooms are a route to cutting fossil heat room by room rather than waiting for a whole-site boiler replacement, and good controls with locked setpoints keep energy use in check across a building run by hundreds of hands.
The August window: how school installations actually get done
Term time is the wrong time to install classroom plant, and every experienced schools contractor knows it. The practical sequence looks like this:
- Survey in the spring or early summer term, while rooms are occupied and the real conditions are visible.
- Design, quote and governor or trust sign-off before the end of the summer term.
- Installation in the holiday window — typically August — with the site team's access arrangements agreed in advance.
- Commissioning and handover before staff return, so the system is proven before the first hot day of term.

Safeguarding belongs on the checklist too. Paying for it: maintained schools, academies and CIF
Funding routes differ by school type. Maintained schools generally look to devolved capital budgets and their local authority's condition programmes. What school air conditioning costs
Classroom projects are priced from a survey, because glazing, orientation, occupancy and pipe routes differ room by room even in one corridor.
